DESIGNING FOR WEB//BRIEFING & NOTES//OUGD504

DESIGNING FOR WEB BRIEFING//WHAT MAKES A GOOD/BAD WEBSITE:
BRIEF:
Design a multi-page website that effectively informs a user about the interesting and informative facts, figures, observations and visual content that you have discovered. In selecting, organising and presenting your source material, you should consider the following:
  • What are you trying to communicate? An idea, a concept, a message a lifestyle?
  • Who are you trying to communicate to? Why and what do you want to achieve?
  • How will you use the creative potential of interactive technology to effectively deliver your content?
  • what is the most appropriate/effective form of content? Text, Image, Facts, Statistics etc.?
  • What is already out there and how can you adapt, modify, reuse or respond to it?
The relationship between your content and design decisions should inform the tone of voice. Do you require humour, sophistication, authority, clarity etc.
You will need to demonstrate an awareness and understanding of the relevant industry standard requirements of designing for web based delivery.

You have to consider various things when creating a web page, what the purpose is, what are you trying to communicate?  These are the main things that need to be addressed:
  • promote a product/advertise/sell
  • Inform/educate/persuade
  • A successful web designer doesn't design a website for themselves/personal taste when creating for a client, must stick to the brief, you have to consider your target audience - this is very important
  • what has already been done? do you want your website to stand out? to have something different about it? an unusual layout, innovative navigation etc.
  • AUDIENCE
  • usually the best designs are the simplest
GOOD WEB DESIGN ASPECTS:
  • simple design
  • consistency
  • good quality images
  • not too many colours
  • black and white design works well
  • standard type
  • clear layout
  • easy to navigate
BAD WEB DESIGN:
  • lots of colours, garish and clashing
  • overcrowded, overcomplicated layout
  • pixilated images
  • complicated navigation
  • animated and moving gifs
  • a long loading time
  • broken links
  • blue hyperlinks
  • talking person in the corner of the screen
  • bright coloured backgrounds and fonts
