WHAT IS DESIGN FOR PRINT?//MAC SUITE SESSION FOUR//OUGD504

SOFTWARE WORKSHOP FOUR/FINDING MISTAKES:
We were asked to find eight mistakes in this piece of work on inDesign and correct them:

  • Missing photo link - photo had a missing link, this is a problem because any images that have missing links won't appear when being sent to print
  • Unused spot colours - these need to be deleted to avoid any mistakes being made in the printing process
  • RGB - An image was in RGB, we needed to go into photoshop and convert it to CMYK, do this without a missing link occurring.
  • RGB colours in swatches - they need to be converted to CMYK which can be done in the swatches palettes
  • Bleed - a bleed was created on the document but the colour on the page didn't go into the bleed edges, this needs to be fixed otherwise the bleed serves no purpose
  • Text Outside Ink Limit - text was outside the ink limit, we had to change this to CMYK black
  • 72ppi Resolution - An image with a resolution of 72 we needed to change this to 300 so it would print properly
  • Oversized Image - There was an image that was too big, we needed to decrease its size so it could fit the bounding box. To do this you have to open the image in photoshop and edit.

  • ONE:

The tree silhouette image was missing from the links, to correct this you need to make sure all the images are in a folder where the links can then trace the folder.  The file/image had been misplaced, on the palette that displays the images with the links, if a link is missing a red symbol will appear with an exclamation mark letting you know an images link is missing, if you double click on the symbol it allows you to find the missing image.

    TWO:
The swatch palette displays two pantones, PANTONE 341 C GREEN and PANTONE 7426 C RED, both these colours are not being used in the document, which means we have to delete them in order to avoid unnecessary separations being outputted which could effect the total cost.  To remove them just remove them from the swatch palette.

    THREE:
The image of the bird is not its original size, it needs to be saved to actual ice before placing it into inDesign.  This is best to do in Photoshop.  This image was only 15.8 % its original size, this can be altered on photoshop.

    FOUR:
One of the images on the double page spread is 72DPO and it needs to be at least  300DPI to keep its quality for print.  The 'link info' section of the links palette will recognise this when the image is selected.  We will need to find the original image as changing it to 300DPI will not make the quality better.

    FIVE:
This image is in colour mode RGB, all of them need to be in CMYK colour mode.  To change this you need to open the image in photoshop and put the colours back into the CMYK gamut, or convert the file to CMYK.

    SIX:
One swatch on the swatch palette is RGB rather than CMYK.  This is shown in the swatch palette where the little icon next to the colour is the RGB (red, green, blue) rather than CMKY.  To change this double click on the swatch and change it over to CMYK.
    SEVEN:
The colours need to go into the bleed line, extend the colours to the bleed line.

    EIGHT:
Registration colour has been applied to the 'for further information...' text at the footer of the page, this will cause problems when printing, the 'ink limit' will be exceeded.  The 'for further information' text is red when you look at the 'ink limit' meaning it could smudge because too much ink is overlaid on top of each other.  Fixing this means reapply the correct colour of black.
