DESIGN FOR PRINT AND WEB//ISTD BRIEF WORKSHOP//OUGD504

In todays workshop session we had to narrow down our three chosen ISTD briefs to one and answer various questions to narrow down and refine the brief allowing us to generate some quick ideas for tomorrows concept pitch:

MY CHOSEN BRIEF:  78rpm – mp3 . . . A celebration of popular song lyrics of the 20th century
5 PROBLEMS I WANT TO SOLVE:
  • How will I communicate effectively the spirit and essence of the songs through my design?
  • How will I explore these lyrics and interpret them successfully through typographic form?
  • How will I explore the lyrics and make it interesting enough to engage the audience?
  • How will my design stand out from previous entrants?
  • What songs could I choose?
5 REASONS WHY?
  • The over commercialised, over produced 'x factor' acts of todays are constantly played, real music and real lyrics need to be remembered
  • I want to figure out a way to explore the lyrics through type but also use image successfully to make it more interesting
  • I want to effectively work with text to design something successfully
  • Songs with meaning and stories should be seen visually, no matter how old the song is
  • Music has contributed massively to culture
5 FACTS ABOUT THE SUBJECT AND CONTENT:
  • Invention of audio recording media in the late 19th, early 20th century led to an explosion of creative song writing
  • Lyrics have informed and influenced culture at every level
  • Each decade of the century has its share of iconic tunes
  • Some influential lyricists that people will know: Bob Dylan, John Lennon, Joe Strummer, Hank Williams etc.
  • The target market is design students, discerning designers and music enthusiasts.

5 FACTS ABOUT YOUR AUDIENCE:
  • Design students, discerning designers, music enthusiasts
  • Likely to know the iconic songs and lyrics
  • Older generations - music from the sixties/seventies - they can relate to, reminisce
  • Bob Dylan/Joe Strummer/John Lennon will be recognisable amongst target audience, big names
  • A lot of people enjoy listening to music, therefore the target audience is fairly broad as people will recognise famous song lyrics
5 IDEAS YOU WANT TO COMMUNICATE:
  • Interpret the lyrics typographically
  • Express te essence and spirit of your chosen songs in a typographic 'tour de force'
  • Bring attention back to good, meaningful lyrics
  • Think of an appropriate format to display my work
  • Think about the use of design and image , don't want it solely to be based on type
5 POSSIBLE OUTCOMES (END PRODUCTS)
  • Music zine dedicated to the lyrics of one song
  • A series of lyric posters exploring the content and history of the songs
  • A music based, lyric, content informed newspaper
  • Time travel of posters over layered with tracing paper to take you through a journey of decades or a journey of album covers/songs?
  • Re design of an album booklet focusing heavily on one or two songs, a story about the history of the song
5 WAYS YOU CAN DISTRIBUTE THESE PRODUCTS:
  • Venues with similar contemporary artists
  • music magazines - in slips
  • Music shops/festivals
  • Events promoting new music/ artists

5 THINGS THAT SHOULD BE COMMUNICATED:

  • A reflection of the songs content through design
  • Mine should stand out
  • The genre
  • Designing effectively through words
